2020 CANADIAN OPEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Event Description

The Canadian Open is Canada's most prestigious chess tournament in terms of breath and depth of tournament participants, prize fund, opportunities for norm, national support and overall quality of tournament organization. Key tournament highlights include the following:

• A total of five sections by rating, with opportunities for norm in the Master section

• FIDE and CFC Rated in all sections

• Skill level of players range from Grand Masters (GM) to Novices

• Guaranteed cash prize fund minimum of $20,000 (Note: Prize fund may be higher based on registrations and available sponsorships. Prize fund will be updated to reflect any changes)

When: July 15th – July 22nd, 2020

Where: Paramount Fine Foods Centre, 5500 Rose Cherry Pl, Mississauga ON L4Z 4B6

Format: 9 Round Swiss. CFC rated & FIDE rated for all sections. CFC membership is required.

Sections: MASTER, U2200, U2000, U1800 and U1600 & Unrated

There are five (5) sections in this tournament, by rating:

U1800 Section: Open to all players 1600 and above and under 1800 in ratings. Players below 1600 may play by paying a play up fee ($50 if rating is at least 1500).

Note: Rating cut-off date is July 1, 2020. If you are bumped up or down a section due to your rating at the rating cut-off date, you will be refunded the cost difference (if you are bumped down to a lower section). If you are bumped up to a higher section, you will be required to pay the difference in fees prior to the start of the first round.

Time Controls: 1.5 hrs + 30 secs increment – All Sections

Byes: 1/2 points for rounds 1 to 4. Zero point for subsequent round byes (All sections).

The byes MUST be requested in advance during registration or in writing before July 10, 2020. Any "byes" requested after July 10, and especially during the tournament will be zero points.

REGULAR REGISTRATION (APRIL 6, 2020 DEADLINE): Master $300 | U2200 $250 | U2000 $250 | U1800 $225 | U1600 & Unrated $200

LATE REGISTRATION (JUNE 1, 2020 DEADLINE): Master $325 | U2200 $275 | U2000 $275 | U1800 $250 | U1600 & Unrated $225

SUPER LATE REGISTRATION (AFTER JUNE 1, 2020): Master $375 | U2200 $325 | U2000 $325 | U1800 $300 | U1600 & Unrated $275

FREE Entry for IM’s and GM’s so long as registration is received on or before April 6, 2020. FM’s get a $20 discount code (Email info@elevatemychess.com with your name and CFC or FIDE ID to get code) so long as registration is received on or before April 6, 2020. After April 6, all players pay regular registration fees in force.

TOURNAMENT PRIZES – Trophies and Cash Prizes

GUARANTEED CASH PRIZE FUND MINIMUM OF $25,000 (Breakdown of prize money to be provided prior to the event)
